International Women's Day Lunch 2017

International Women's Day Lunch 2017

08 December 2016

Update January 2017: Due to unprecedented demand, this event has now been sold out.

Many of you have attended previous lunches, but for those who have not attended before, we always have an enjoyable afternoon when like-minded women from our region get together and celebrate International Women’s Day while at the same time fundraising for an international project which benefits women and girls.

This year I am happy to support the International Rescue Centre (IRC). Money raised will go towards safe spaces for women and girl refugees from Syria who have fled to Jordan. The safe spaces provided at three camps will provide counselling against gender-based violence, healthcare, education and recreational healing activities.
I am delighted Doctor Julie Gottlieb of Sheffield University has agreed to be our guest speaker at the lunch. She will talk about ‘Women After the Vote was Won’. We will hear about our first female MPs and the different paths taken after women got the vote by former-suffragists as well as their anti-suffragist adversaries. Rachel Reeves MP has also agreed to say a few words about her new book ‘Alice in Westminster’, a biography on the first Yorkshire woman MP Alice Bacon and we will have a speaker from the IRC.
The cost of the ticket will be £13, including buffet lunch. You can book your place or table now by contacting Nicola Sumner in my Wath office, who is coordinating the event. Please email enquiries to her at We did sell out at the last lunch and please contact us early to avoid disappointment.

If you would like to help raise money for the project or advertise it, I can send more information if you contact me. We have had a trek through the Sahara desert in the past and many coffee mornings. The IRC have a fantastic fundraising pack I can send out full of ideas for anyone interested. If you can’t attend but would like to donate to the charity, my just giving page is and you can text LMEP50 £amount to 70070 or contact my office.

I hope you will be able to join me in March 2017 to raise money for this important project. I look forward to seeing regular friends and meeting new guests. Your support for the IWD events is and has been very much appreciated over the last 10 years and together we have, so far, raised over £56,500 helping women and girls across the world.
