Labour MEPs support the TUC’s Dying to Work campaign
22 March 2018
Myself and my Labour colleague for Yorkshire and the Humber Richard Corbett MEP are proudly supporting the TUC’s Dying to Work campaign. We recently talked with a representative from the campaign at the Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Labour Party Conference in Saltaire. The Dying to Work campaign want to see terminal illness recognised as a ‘protected characteristic’ in our employment and equality laws – this would allow an employee with a terminal illness to enjoy a ‘protected period’ where they could not be dismissed or discriminated against as a result of their condition. For any employee in this position, this change would give them greater security in their job and go some way in giving those affected better piece of mind in what must be such a difficult situation.
The EU has done a lot for workers’ rights over the years, including better protection for part-time workers and equal pay for work of equal value. My Labour colleague Rory Palmer MEP is taking the TUC campaign to an EU level and called on the European Parliament to sign the Dying to Work charter earlier this month.
