14 March 2006: £5,000 raised for Fistula Hospital

The scene before the dinner

Yorkshire Euro-MP, Linda McAvan has thanked all those people who made her fundraising dinner last Thursday for the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital such a success. In total, more than £5,500 was raised.

The Wakefield dinner, which also celebrated International Women's Day, was attended by more than a hundred women from around Yorkshire and the Humber.

Doncaster MP and Health Minister Rosie Winterton spoke at the dinner, as did Clive Hewitt, a representative of the charity.

Speaking before the dinner, Ms McAvan had said;
"I'll never forget my visit to the hospital. The women - some of them as young as 14 - queuing outside. Many of their families had sold everything they owned to fund their journey there. Because the girls are incontinent, the urine had to be drained away along the path. Against this horrific backdrop, the hospital is an oasis. The operations are quick and simple. The whole experience is life transforming for these women."

Anyone wishing to donate to the hospital or find out more should visit http://www.charitynet.org/~HCCIF/ or contact Linda McAvan's office.
