30th November 2006 - Linda McAvan MEP elected as Vice-President of European Parliament's Socialist Group

Yorkshire Member of the European Parliament Linda McAvan was yesterday elected Vice President of the Socialist Group, which brings together 200 MEPs from across the 25 EU countries, and is the second largest group in the Parliament.

Her election took place at the constitutive meeting in Brussels, and she will now serve as Vice President until the end of this parliament in 2009. Ms McAvan had previously served as Treasurer on the nine member executive committee of the Group.

She will have particular responsibility for citizens rights, justice and home affairs, and women's rights.
