8th January 2009 - Statement on violence in Gaza

Linda McAvan has joined with other Socialist MEPs issuing a statement expressing outrage at the violence in Gaza and calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

The statement goes on request that “the Israeli authorities to allow food, urgent medical aid and fuel to be delivered to the Gaza Strip through the opening of the crossing point and the lifting of the blockade” and reaffirms that there is “no military solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict”.

The statement also makes clear that the Socialist Group will not support an upgrading of the EU’s relations with Israel whilst the current situation continues.

Linda McAvan said;

“I like many people have been horrified by the recent pictures from the Middle East. As a Group we do not in any way condone the Hamas missiles but nothing can justify the indiscriminate bombings which are taking such a heavy toll on human life and causing so much suffering. A high level EU mission was dispatched to the Middle East this week in an attempt to secure a ceasefire and improve humanitarian aid. I wish that mission every success.”
