Working in Europe for Everyone in Yorkshire and the Humber

27th February 2009 - Celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight

Linda McAvan and Wentworth MP John Healey teamed up today to serve tea and coffee as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.

The politicians, who share an office on High Street in Wath-upon-Dearne, Rotherham, invitedpassers-by to stop off for a cuppa to sample some Fairtrade products.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade enables producers in developing countries to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

Linda McAvan, who Chairs the European Parliament’s Fairtrade group says;

“Fairtrade isn’t just a concept – it’s a really practical way of making a difference to the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. I have seen firsthand the difference that Fairtrade makes in Africa and the Caribbean. The more people who regularly buy Fairtrade products, the more of difference we can all make.”

John Healey MP says;

“During this global economic downturn, it is vital that world trade continues. By buying food and presents from developing countries we will help grow their economies and reduce poverty. Our shopping habits can make a real difference to the world’s poorest people.

“No country has reduced poverty in the last 30 years without also increasing trade. This is why Labour has led international efforts to secure fairer trade rules.”

Later, Linda launched a new Facebook group, aimed at bringing together people with an interest in the products, and in trade issues. You can join that group here.
