4th March 2009 - Linda welcomes Dairy Milk Fairtrade move

Local Euro-MP and Fairtrade campaigner Linda McAvan has welcomed the news today that Cadbury’s Dairy Milk bars are to become certified Fairtrade.

The MEP, who Chairs the European Parliament’s Fairtrade Group, has long campaigned for Fairtrade goods to be more widely available in order to support farmers and producers in developing countries.

It is thought that the move by Cadbury will treble the amount of Fairtrade cocoa sourced from Ghana.

Linda recently set up a Facebook Group, “Fairtrade in Yorkshire and Humber” to help people to find Fairtrade shops and products nearby.

Linda McAvan says;

“This is a major coup, bring Fairtrade right into the mainstream, and it will mean that many farmers in Ghana will no longer have to worry that their crop will not sell for enough money to allow them to feed their own children. No longer will they be subject to the worst excesses of fluctuating prices in the global marketplace. And because of the way Fairtrade works, this will mean better local facilities in some of the communities that need them most.”

She added;

“This will also make Dairy Milk just that little bit more enjoyable.”
