Promoting Carbon Monoxide Safety in hotels

Linda is leading a campaign in the European Parliament to raise awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning and improve safety measures against carbon monoxide poisoning in hotels across Europe.

Following the tragic deaths of two children from the region of carbon monoxide poisoning in Corfu, Linda is making the case for carbon monoxide alarms in all hotel rooms around Europe where there may be a risk of a leak.

In February Linda met with Commissioner Kuneva to discuss what can be done. The Commissioner is taking a personal interest and wants to look at the whole issue of hotel safety. New EU laws will take time to come into affect, so Linda is pressing for practical steps that can be taken in the short term, for example a voluntary agreement with the hotel industry to install carbon monoxide alarms where there are gas appliances present.

Have you protected your own home?

Card-sized detectors for £5 can be bought in most supermarkets. They are attached to an appliance / boiler and rely on a dot system which change colour if carbon monoxide present.

Slightly more expensive battery detectors operate an audible alarm, during the night for example when a dot colour change wouldn't be seen.
