Linda wants your left over holiday coins to raise money for Alzheimer’s society

Linda is asking people to drop off their left-over holiday currency at her Wath-upon-Dearne office to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Sadly, 665,065 people in England alone are living with some form of dementia, with nearly 17,000 of those in South Yorkshire. The coins collected will be exchanged by the Alzeheimer’s society to help them fund research into the cause, cure, care and prevention of dementia.

Linda said; “If you have been lucky enough to go overseas on holiday this summer, or if like most of us you have some old coins collecting dust in a drawer, please drop them into my office. At the end of October we will donate all the coins to the Alzheimer’s society to help fund their essential and life-changing research.”

Linda has pushed for the European Union to do more to address Alzheimer’s, working closely with the European Alzheimer’s Alliance to organise workshops where scientists, patients and politicians have worked together to establish best practice and outline what else can be done.

“Like many people, it was when loved ones were affected by neurological disorders that I became much more aware of the need for more research in this area. I have pushed the EU to pool knowledge and resources to both treat Alzheimer's and establish best practice for those living with Alzheimer’s, and for their carers.” added Linda.

Zoe Barraclough Community Fundraiser South Yorkshire & Humber said “We are delighted that Linda and her team are giving their time to support Alzheimer’s Society. One in three people over 65 will die with dementia. It is more than just memory loss; it robs people of their lives and has a devastating impact on families and loved ones.

“As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals to help us continue our vital work. We have lots of different fundraising initiatives and collecting foreign coins is just one of them and it works really well in an office or corporate environment so we’re really glad Linda is working with her constituents to support us in this way.”

Linda shares her office with John Healey MP at 79 High Street in Wath-upon-Dearne. Please drop your coins off between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and all foreign coins of any value would be very much appreciated.

If you are unable to visit the office, you can call the Alzheimer’s society on 0845 306 0898 or visit alzheimers.org.uk for more information about donating your coins to them directly.
